This article examines the main features characterizing the system of social protection of war veterans in some foreign countries. Namely, the features of the formation of the social security system for war veterans of foreign countries are considered using the experience of the United States of America and Great Britain in order to improve the national system of social security for war veterans in Ukraine and bring it closer to international standards. A comparative analysis was conducted between the social security systems of the studied countries in order to identify the most effective tools of social security for war veterans. The study of foreign experience of state policy regarding the protection of veterans makes it possible to assert that there are several options for building domestic systems for the protection of veterans, the priority directions of which are: a) implementation of special legislation, b) creation of a special state body, c) determination of the level of state social assistance. Unconditional factors of social protection are: the level of national economic well-being, the powers and activities of public charitable organizations, and legislation. Given that Ukraine is in a state of protracted military aggression, there is a need to improve the legislation regulating the issue of social security for war veterans. In addition, this is due to the rapid increase in the number of people who need social protection due to the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, and the lack of sufficient own experience gives urgent importance to the study of this issue. Certain conclusions were made regarding the possibility of borrowing the experience of these countries to improve the social security system of war veterans in Ukraine during the period of martial law and in the post-war period. Today, the political, economic, and social demands of society pose tasks to the state that require urgent solutions and are important for ensuring a decent standard of living for those who defended territorial integrity and defended their state
