The article examines the scientific achievements of the founder of Ukrainian legal science, V. Koretsky. His legacy is analyzed in the perspective of the formation of modern legal principles of international security. The main areas of research by V. Koretsky and their significance for the structure of international security in the current state of international relations are determined. The achievements of the scientist in the formation of the theory and practice of international law are systematized. The place and role of V. Koretsky in the creation of the UN and international security structures are studied. The article analyzes in detail the significance of V. Koretsky's scientific heritage for modern times, establishing the problems of the legal personality of the state, its right to protect its own interests and borders. A practical study of several areas of V. Koretsky's achievements is carried out, and it is concluded that the discussion about the legacy of the scientist and the formation of international security is organically intertwined in the broad context of the development of modern international law. The article focuses on the restoration of the effective operation of the principle of the rule of law in international relations. The opinion is expressed that political interests, spheres of influence and the possibility of coercive pressure prevail over legal instruments. An interim conclusion is made that it is also inappropriate to follow exclusively the path of «legal punishment» for violators, since this can lead to even greater confrontation in the world if the legal aspect is not combined with the diplomatic one. It is determined that the most effective seems to be the aforementioned synthetic approach: the formation of a cult of international law, the improvement of judicial mechanisms, the counteraction of aggression with sanctions, and at the same time modernizing universal and regional organizations of international security so that they can respond more flexibly to acute crises. It is emphasized that Ukraine, having its own experience of armed confrontation and violation of its territorial integrity, can and should stimulate the international community to review existing mechanisms, including by proposing practical solutions to increase the effectiveness of international institutions.
